A Beginner’s Guide to Special Makeup Effects: Monsters, Maniacs and More is an introduction to special effects makeup using cost-effective tools and materials that can be found in local stores.
The book is divided into three sections – Simple Makeup, Advanced Materials and Techniques and Advanced Makeup – and features tutorials to create characters such as a pirate, vampire, ghost, robot, burn victim, witch, zombie and goblin. Each character is introduced with a full-page photograph of the finished makeup and illustrated with full-color, step-by-step photographs. The book also includes instructions on how to make fake teeth, apply bald caps, create gory wounds and injuries and make simple prosthetics. Each makeup tutorial is designed to progressively build on the techniques outlined in the preceding tutorial, guiding readers from the basics of foundation, highlight and shadow to creating advanced creature makeups.
This is a beginner makeup book suited for students of Stage Makeup courses, as well as for the theatre technician working and training on their own.

Title: Great resource, beautiful photos!
Review: I’ve found this book to be an amazing resource for pushing my makeup skills. The full-color pictures are really helpful and show amazing detail. Not sure what the other reviewer was talking about with black-and-white pics.I am learning so many new techniques and ways of applying prosthetics. Can’t wait for my order of more latex to arrive so I can get started creating my own monsters!

Title: Paperback version photos are in B/W
Review: While the information in the book is solid, all of the photos in the book are in black and white. Impossible to see color, highlighting, or details of the work. Makes a book on special effects and makeup useless!

Review: It is an easy book to follow. Has many of the popular special effects for Halloween characters. Is a fun book to learn special effects from. I highly recommend this book. For those people just learning special makeup effects. Or for a reference book for those who just need a little refreshing on their makeup special effects skills. Like this book very much and I recommend to you too.

Review: This book says that itâs got colour photos it does not. I got the paperback copy itâs all black and white and you can hardly see anything in the pictures. Theyâre so dark.
