Title: Great for regional guide
Review: This is a perfect book for identifying reptiles and amphibians in the mid-Atlantic region. I live on a farm and spend a lot of time outdoors, so I encounter critters a lot. This book is the first one I grab to look up details on natural history, ranges, details of their ecology, etc. I also go hiking and backpacking a lot, and see things that I want to look up when I get back home. I have several field guides for both reptiles and amphibians, but having a regional guide narrows down the choices, and also shows the local/regional details for species whose ranges extend beyond this region, especially those that show a lot of subspecific/regional phenotypic variation. I have a copy of the first edition, and the changes in the taxonomy (splitting of salamanders, e.g.) makes this one a great book for the recent changes. Good pictures, good range maps, good natural history details– that’s exactly what you want in a guide like this.

Title: Amazing, full-color resource!
Review: We recently moved to NC and have thrilled to find so much wildlife wherever we turn. Googling is helpful, but having this full-color book complete with maps is the BEST. We have been dragging it around with us on our nature walks, and I full expect it to be dog-eared within the month. The *only* thing that would make it better would be a map in the front with cities on it to the scale of the maps with each species – that would help us narrow down our area a little better, but it would just be the icing on the cake. Highly recommend this book!

Title: A few flaws
Review: A very good introductory book, but it should include all subbspecies. There is also room in the coverage of the anole to discuss the “roach” on the back of the neck of breeding males. There needs to be a photo of this, because if you encounter one, you might think it is a different species, as I did this summer (thank goodness for the internet!). One small criticism is the description of the box turtle as having a brown carapace. This should read “brown to jet black”. There is definitely a good percentage of Caroilna’s box turtles that have BLACK shells !

Title: Great photos, solid and simplistic descriptions
Review: Great photos, solid and simplistic descriptions, distinguishing between similar species, etc. This book is a great guide for referencing local herps (southeastern NC); I’ve definitely used it out in the field before. Super handy!
